Did you hear the one about the developer who threw a $20 million red-carpet party to celebrate the opening of his latest resort? Yes, in this economy. Last night Sol Kerzner, the hotel and casino magnate, threw a celebrity-doused bash to toast the opening of the newest [Atlantis resort](http://www.atlantisthepalm.com/) on Dubai’s manmade Palm Jumeirah island. It attracted some 2,000 guests who were entertained by a 10-song set from Kylie Minogue and a fireworks display from the same company that put on the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony. Apparently the world’s largest sporting event had nothing on this party—the organizers told the Wall Street Journal that the planned fireworks show would be seven times larger. (Judging from this [video](http://www.atlantisthepalm.com/grandopening.aspx), they might have been understating the spectacle).
The resort’s opening coincides with new direct flights to Dubai from the United States on [Emirates](http://www.halogenguides.com/articles/1531-new-nonstop-flights-from-california-to-dubai-on-emirates), which make traveling halfway around the world just a little bit easier. Among the resort’s 1,539 guestroom options are the Lost Chambers Suites, underwater rooms that look out on marine life, and the three-bedroom Bridge Suite, which sits suspended between the hotel’s two towers. Nightly price tag? $25,000. The least expensive standard rooms in mid-December start at about $510 a night. Fireworks not included.
